One day in Tallinn.

In april my friend Christina and me made a mini cruise to Estonia, Russia and Finland. The schedule gave us one whole day in every country and over night we took the boat to the next stop. Before we left Stockholms harbor, I looked up the top  sights for every stop, so that we were somewhat prepared of what we have or don’t have to do and see :) So here is what we did one day long in Tallinn, Estonia:

1. Great Coastal Gate & Fat Margaret’s Tower

Since we were heading towards town from the harbor, this was our first stop – the entrance through the huge gate that let us to Tallins old town. Walking through the gate felt like traveling back to the medieval times.

2. St. Olav’s Church

The tower of this church was so incredibly tall! The view from it’s top is probably breathtaking…

3. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

I was very surprised when I saw this church, it didn’t fit in at all. But it is pretty after all ;)

4. Panoramic view

Tallinns old town has a lot of spots from where you can look over the city walls and catch a glimpse of the rooftops and the coast.

5. Town Hall Square

This was just beautiful. Lots and lots of petite shops and restaurants full of Estonias finest. This is where I bought my very first souvenir of the trip. :)

So if this made you curious for more, you should take the next boat, train, flight or whatever to medieval Tallinn!

My kitchen is a german bakery.

A couple of weeks ago one of my colleagues and me were talking about german food and when she mentioned my all time favorite cake, I just knew I had to make it someday. And the next weekend that day had arrived :) So here you go, one of the best cakes ever:

Amerikaner (Americans)

Ingredients:

100 g butter

100 g sugar

1 package vanilla sugar

salt

2 eggs

1 package pudding powder (vanilla flavor)

4 tablespoons milk

250 g flour

3 teaspoons baking soda

lemon juice, powdered sugar, chocolate glaze for decorating

You mix all the ingredients together, not the one for decorating though ;)  I would recommend to warm up the butter in a pan to make it easier to blend in. Then you put small piles of dough on a baking sheet and bake them under 10-15 minutes at 200°C.

When the cakes are ready you flip them up side down and put them on a grid. Blend the lemon juice with the powdered sugar to a sticky texture and put it on the cakes.

Let the first layer of glaze dry and add another one if needed. When everything is dry you can put the chocolate on top. I did it the traditional way but you can decorate the cakes as you like! Bon appétit :)

P.S.: I tried to find out why they are called “americans” and found four different explanations 1. it’s a short form for ammonium (baking soda). 2. American soldiers created this cake during WW2 in Germany. 3. A cake named “black and white” came to Germany in the 50s and Amerikaner was easier to pronounce. 4. Because they look like Brody-helmets from WW1.

My favorite place #1.

I just got a brilliant idea! It might be more brilliant to myself than to any other but that’s not the point right now ;) I thought about when I usually take all my pictures, because I’m for sure not always in the mood. And then it came to me: It’s when I’m in places I love, places I enjoy and adore! So here is the plan: during the upcoming weeks I’m going to write posts about my favorite places, not only here in Stockholm but all over the world :) And you will see, it’s not only the big and sparkly things that we like the best.

#1 My Backyard

On the backside of our apartment there is this very nice forest with birch tress, pines and a lot of moss covered stones. My personal heaven :)

If you follow the tracks further downhill you will be able to see the water after a while.

Down by the waterside a wooden path is leading around the rocky hills and down to a small harbor.

If you like this, you will love Stockholm! :)
